Coronavirus Trib Live News Articles Commentaries

August 2020

By Gary F. Zeolla

These Commentaries are continued from Coronavirus News Articles Commentaries: July 2020.

These commentaries are only about the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. For my commentaries on other news events, see Commentaries on Biblical and Constitutional Politics. Opposite of that page, the comments are posted here in chronological order. Oldest on top, newest at the bottom. For additional Coronavirus Commentaries, see  Coronavirus Articles and Commentaries on Biblical and Constitutional Politics.

This page only contains short comments I’ve posted about news articles on Trib Live, which is the website for three Pittsburgh area newspapers, including my hometown newspaper. I read their website every day. Trib Live is left leaning in its perspective across all three of its newspapers and on its website. The comments at the end of articles are also mostly left leaning, being posted mostly by people from the very blue city of Pittsburgh. As such, my voice is rather unique. That is why I decided to start posting comments, to counter the liberal perspective.  There is a 750-character limit to comments, so I need to be concise in my comments, which is not always easy for me to do. The title links open in a new window.

Nursing home deaths not from bars and restaurants

Allegheny County records 2nd highest new covid-19 case count

“The reported deaths range in age from 74-93 years”

This has been the case all week. In addition, TV news, but not here, report that all of the deaths this week are among nursing home residents. That has been the case since the start of this pandemic here in PA. Most of the deaths are in nursing homes. We still have not protected those precious residents, and closing bars and restaurants do not help in that regard, as nursing home residents do not go to such!

I know, people go to bars and restaurant then to nursing homes, at least that’s the justification for their closures. But how about just testing people before they enter nursing homes, and leave businesses that nursing home residents do not frequent open?

Another misleading headline

California officials report first virus death of a child

Another misleading headline. This “child” was 17. I don’t know about you, but if I were called a “child” back when I was 17 (a long time ago), I would have been offended. Note also, “it was possible he died from something else.” A more honest headline would be, “California officials report death of a teenager for unknown causes.” But such a honest headline would not scare parents into keeping their children out of school in the fall, so it doesn’t serve the leftist agenda.

California becomes first state to pass 600,000 coronavirus cases

Talk about a non-headline. California is the largest state in the union, so of course they would reach such a milestone first. Now if Rhode Island had reached this milestone first, THAT would be news.

“there is growing evidence that the surge in infections and fatalities that began when California reopened its economy in May is beginning to slow.”

California never fully reopened. The surge began with the protests and riots in late May.

Low Profile Arrest and Coronavirus Spike

Allegheny County posts lower new covid case count for 4th straight day

‘Low profile’ arrest creates firestorm as officials, experts blast Pittsburgh police tactic

Two weeks from now, there will be another spike in Coronavirus cases, due to the new wave of protests over the “low profile arrest” of a rioter. But Mayor Peduto will blame anything and everything except the protests, just like he did with the recent spike.

As for the arrest itself, if the police had used a “high profile arrest” and that caused a surge in violence, that would have been decried. Sadly, to many today, nothing the police do is right. As a result, I fear Pittsburgh could turn into Portland soon.

Trump vs. BLM Rally

Trump lashes Biden, defies pandemic on White House stage

All of this violence is happening in Dem-controlled cities. If the Dem mayors would let Trump send in the National Guard, he could end the violence, like he did in Minnesota and Kenosha. But other than those two cities, the Dems will not let him end the violence. However, Biden would not be prepared to do so even if asked, as evidenced by the fact that it took him three months to even admit the violent riots were even occurring.

As for “defying the pandemic,” there were 1,500 people in attendance, outdoors. But at the woke BLM rally on Saturday in DC, there were 10,000s in attendance, with no social distancing. Even Al Sharpton told them, “You are too close, spread apart, put your arms out.” But no one listened.

Many were not wearing masks, and many that were wearing them were not wearing them correctly, with the masks not covering their noses. However, I did not hear one news pundits on any of the cable news outlets decrying the event as “defying the pandemic.”

All of this has been the case ever since the George Floyd tragedy, and it is why we have had such problems with the CV since then. It is not Trump’s fault. BLM protests and riots are to blame the increase in CV cases and deaths across the country.

Someone replied to the above comment, saying, “The Governor of Wisconsin, not Trump, sent the National Guard to Kenosha.” He then made a snide comment.

I initially replied, “Sorry, but the gov did initially, but then he requested more Guard from the feds, that’s Trump. That’s when the violence ended. And once again, you just cannot resist making a snide comment. So sad.”

I then did a bit of research and found the following:

Trump Says ‘That’s the Way It Works’ after National Guard Suppresses Kenosha Protests

While an initial offer of federal help was rejected, Democratic governor Tony Evers accepted the assistance following the shooting deaths of two protesters….

Around 1,000 National Guard and 200 federal law enforcement personnel were deployed following an appeal from the state’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers, the White House said (Newsweek, reprinted in MSM).

I then told the commenter he owed me apology, but I don’t expect one.

    Later I added the following:

The article “National Guard called out after police shoot Black man” here on the Trib was on August 24. It refers to the initial call of 125 Guard by the Gov Evers. That is what I referred to the first part my first response. But the Trib never posted an update about the later 1,000 Guard and 200 feds officers the Newsweek article reports about on August 29 that I refer to in the second part of that response.

IOW, I was exactly correct, while you were half correct, on the first part, not the second part. But to give you the benefit of the doubt. If you depend solely on the Trib, you never get the full picture, as the Trib is too bias against Trump to print an update like Newsweek did. But still, you owe me an apology. I’m waiting.

I never got that apology. But for a clarification and further details on this debate, see Joe Biden in Pittsburgh (Lies and Mischaracterizations).
