FiberSol (Twinlab)

By Gary F. Zeolla

In my God-given Foods Eating Plan book, I discuss the benefits of both soluble and insoluble fiber. But I state the evidence for the former is greater than the latter. It is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease (p.51). But soluble fiber also helps relieve constipation, and it is for that reason that many people use a fiber supplement. However, the best way to attain fiber is through food not supplements. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes all contain fiber. But as I state in my book, legumes provide “more fiber than you’ll get from a single serving of most any other food” (p.55). Moreover, legumes contain both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Therefore, if you have a problem with constipation, try consuming more of the these foods, and especially try eating some legumes each day before taking a fiber supplement. That way, you’ll get not only the fiber, but also the protein, iron, folic acid, copper, and many other nutrients found in legumes. But if that is not possible or does not work, then a fiber supplement would be worth a try. It is a much better alternative than any drug laxative.

It is for that reason that I used Twinlab’s FiberSol at one time. There are many fiber supplements available, but I prefer FiberSol over others for several reasons. First, it is available in both powder and capsule form, so whichever is more convenient can be used. But the recommend dosage with the capsules is 3-5 capsules a day. It is easy to take one capsule with each of three to five different meals. That way, the fiber is spread out over the day, which is more natural than taking it all at once.

Second, FiberSol contains three different sources for the fiber: psyllium seed husk, guar gum, and apple pectin. Most fiber supplements only contain psyllium seed husk. Third, and most importantly, there are no artificial ingredients, while many commercially available products contain artificial flavorings, colorings, and worst of all, aspartame. All such chemical are best avoided. Fourth, it simply works rather well.

To conclude, if you have a problem with constipation, try consuming more of the above foods, and especially try eating some legumes each day before taking a fiber supplement. But if that is not possible or does not work, then Twinlab’s FiberSol would be worth a try.
