Student Debt Transfer vs. The Substitutionary Atonement of Christ

I have titled this short article “Student Debt Transfer” rather than “Student Loan Forgiveness” for a reason. That reason is nothing is forgiven. That implies the elimination of something, as in, your sins are forgiven when you trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. In that case, your sins are completely eliminated, no longer remembered.

But with Biden’s student loan plan, that debt is not eliminated. It is transferred to someone else. In a way, there is a comparison to forgiveness in Christ. In that case, your sins are transferred to Christ, and He paid for them by His death on the cross. In this case, a student’s debt is transferred to taxpayers, and we the taxpayers pay for the borrower’s debt.

To put it another way, sins are always paid for, either by you when you answer to God for them, or by them being paid by Christ’s death on the cross. Similarly, loans are always repaid. Either they are paid by the debtor, when he repays the loan, or by the lender, when he is forced to assume the cost of the loan when the debtor defaults, or by someone else who pays the debt for the debtor.

The latter is what Biden’s plan is doing. Students’ loans are being repaid by we the taxpayers. In the process, students will have more money to spend on products, which will increase inflation, costing us even more money, colleges and universities will increase their tuition, as they will be able to tell students to not worry about accumulating debt, as it will be forgiven in the future, and the cycle will continue.

The way to break the cycle would be to get the government out of the student loan business altogether. It was under Obama that student loans were federalized, and that began the spike in college costs that we are still dealing with today. All of that is a very bad thing.

However, having your sins transferred to Christ (known as the Substitutionary Atonement) is a very good thing, with lots of good results, such as being given a renewed nature, attaining a restored relationship with God, and having an assurance of eternal life.

¹⁷Therefore, if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; the old [things] passed away; behold, all [things] have become new! [cp. Gal 6:15] ¹⁸And all these [things are] of God, the One having reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ and having given to us the ministry of that reconciliation, ¹⁹how that God was in Christ reconciling [the] world to Himself, not imputing their transgressions to them and having put in [or, having committed to] us the word of that reconciliation.

²⁰Therefore, we serve as ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God [were] appealing through us: we implore [you*] on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God! 21For the One not having known sin, He made sin on our behalf, so that we shall become [the] righteousness of God in Him (2Corinthians 5:17-20); ALT3).
