Good Friday Bible Passages

I’m a day late on this, as I was busy yesterday, but it is still worth posting:

4This [One] bears our sins and suffered pain for us, and we accounted Him to be in toil and in misfortune and in mistreatment. 5But He was wounded because of our iniquities and was softened [fig., bruised] because of our sins; [the] discipline of our peace [was] upon Him; by His wound[s] we were healed. [1Peter 2:24; cp., Rom 4:25; Heb 5:8; 9:28] 6All we as sheep were led astray; [every] person was led astray in his [own] way, and the LORD gave Him up for our sins. [cp. 1Peter 2:25]

7And He, because of to have been mistreated, did not open [His] mouth; He was led as a sheep to slaughter, and as a lamb silent before the one shearing him, thus He does not open His mouth. [cp. Matt 26:63; 27:12-14; Mark 14:61; 15:5; Luke 23:9; John 19:9] 8In [His] humiliation His judgment was taken away. Who will declare His generation? For His life is taken away from the earth. [Acts 8:32,33] “From [or, Because of] the iniquities of My people, He was led into death. 9And I will give the wicked [people] for His burial and the rich [people] for His death [cp. Matt 27:57-60; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23: 50-54; John 19:38-42], for He did no iniquity, nor was deceit found in His mouth [1Peter 2:22; cp. 2Cor 5:21; Heb 4:15; 7:26; 1John 3:5]” (Isaiah 53:4-9; ALT – https://www.zeolla.org/christian/books/preview/alt_ot/vol_3.htm ).

The Greek LXX of this vital passage is a bit different than the Hebrew. But the message is the same. Christ died for our sins. The many times this passage (written centuries before the time of Jesus) is quoted or alluded to in the New Testament (as seen in the cross references) shows its importance. One of those is the following:

21Because, for this [reason] you* were called, because Christ also suffered on our behalf, leaving behind an example for you*, so that you* should follow in His footsteps, 22who “Did not sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth,” [Isaiah 53:9] 23who being verbally abused, was not returning verbal insults, suffering, was not threatening, but was entrusting Himself to the One judging righteously; 24who Himself carried our sins in His body upon the tree [or, cross], so that having died to sins, we shall live to righteousness; of whom “by His wound[s] you* were healed.” [Isaiah 53:5] 25For you* were like sheep being led astray, but now you* were turned back to the Shepherd and Overseer of your* souls (1Peter 2:21-25; ALT3c)

Happy Easter everyone!

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

22“Men, Israelites! Pay attention to these words! Jesus the Nazarene, a Man having been attested by God among you* by miraculous works and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your* midst, just as you* yourselves also know—23this One, handed over by the having been designated plan and foreknowledge of God, you* having taken by lawless hands, having crucified, you* executed; 24whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible [for] Him to continue being held by it. 25For David says in regard to Him:

I myself was foreseeing the Lord through all [fig. continually] before me, because He is at my right [parts] [fig., on my right side], so that I shall not be shaken. 26Because of this, my heart celebrated, and my tongue expressed great happiness, and yet my flesh also will rest on hope [or, confident expectation]; 27because You will not abandon my soul to the realm of the dead [Gr., hades], nor will You give [fig., allow] Your Devout [or, Holy] One to see decay [or, corruption]. 28You made known to me [the] ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your face [fig., presence]. [Psalm 16:8-11, verse 9 LXX]

29“Men, brothers! It is possible [for me] to speak with confidence to you* concerning the patriarch David, that he both came to the end [of his life] and was buried, and his tomb is with us until this day. 30Therefore, being a prophet and knowing that God vowed to him with an oath, from [the] fruit of his reproductive organs according to [the] flesh [fig., from one of his descendants], to raise up the Christ [or, the Messiah] to sit on his throne, 31having foreseen [this], he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that ‘His soul was not left in the realm of the dead [Gr., hades], nor did His flesh see decay [or, corruption].’ [Psalm 16:10] 32This Jesus God raised up, of which we are all witnesses! (Acts 2:22-32; ALT3c)

The Integrity of the Resurrection

  Trusting Genesis and the Gospels
A Defense of Divine Creation, of the Resurrection of Christ, and of Salvation in Christ

On this Easter Sunday, if you or someone you know doubts the integrity of the resurrection of Jesus, then this is the book for you.

This book addresses three vital subjects in regards to the Christian faith.

The first is the reliability of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible and of the Old Testament, and most specifically its teachings about divine creation.

The second subject is the reliability of the Gospels, the first four books of the New Testament of the Holy Bible, and most specifically their claims about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The preceding leads to the third subject of this book, “Forgiveness and Salvation in Christ.” Since God is our Creator, we are answerable to Him. And we have all sinned against Him. But Jesus’ resurrection demonstrated that God accepted Christ’s death as a sufficient sacrifice for our sins. We can thus be forgiven and saved by trusting in His death and resurrection.
