2Peter 1

1Simon Peter, a slave and an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the ones having obtained [or, having been chosen to have] an equally precious faith with us [or, a faith as valuable as ours] by [the] righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ [i.e., one Person is referred to here; cp. the same construction in 1:11; 2:20; 3:2,18]:

2May grace and peace be multiplied to you* in the full [or, true] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, [i.e., two Persons are referred to here; the construction is different from verse one] 3as [fig., seeing that] His divine power has given to us all the [things] pertaining to life and godliness through the full [or, true] knowledge of the One having called us by glory and excellence, 4through which the most precious and great promises have been given to us, so that through these you* shall become participants of a divine nature [or, sharers in [the] divine nature], having escaped from the corruption [that is] in [the] world by lust.

5But also [for] this very [reason], having applied all diligence, provide with your* faith moral excellence [or, virtue], and with moral excellence knowledge, 6and with knowledge self-control, and with self-control patient endurance, and with patient endurance godliness, 7and with godliness brotherly love [fig., affection for fellow-believers], and with brotherly love [Gr., philadelphia] love [Gr., agape]. 8For [if] these [qualities] belong to you* and [are] abounding [or, increasing], it makes [you*] neither useless nor unfruitful in regard to the full [or, true] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For [the one] with whom these [qualities] are not present is blind, being shortsighted, having become forgetful of the cleansing [or, purgation] of his former sins.

10For this reason, rather, brothers [and sisters], be eager [or, diligent] to be making certain His calling and choice [or, election] of you*, for these [things] doing, you* shall by no means stumble at any time. 11For in this way, the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you*.

12For this reason, I will not neglect to be always reminding you* concerning these [things], although you* know [them] and have been established in the present truth. 13But I consider [it] right, as long as I am in this tent-like dwelling [fig., this body] to be waking [fig., stirring] you* up by way of reminder, 14knowing that the taking down of my tent-like dwelling [fig., that my death] is soon, even as also our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. [see John 21:18,19] 15But I will be eager [or, will make every effort] also to cause you* to be having at all times after my departure [Gr., exodus] a remembrance of these [things].

16For not having followed having been cleverly made-up myths, we made known to you* the power and Arrival [or, Coming] of our Lord Jesus Christ, but having become eyewitnesses of the magnificence of that One. 17For having received from God [the] Father honor and glory, such a voice being brought [fig., uttered] to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My Son--the Beloved--in whom I am well-pleased.” [Matt 17:5] 18And this voice we heard, being brought [fig., uttered] out of heaven, being with Him on the holy mountain.

19And we have the prophetic word [made] more certain [or, confirmed], to which you* do well [to be] paying close attention to, as a lamp shining in a dark place, until [the] day dawns and a morning star arises in your hearts [i.e., entire inner selves, including the intellect, volition, and emotions]; 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture comes of private interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by [the] will of a person, but holy men of God spoke being moved along by [the] Holy Spirit. [cp. 2Tim 3:16]
