1Peter 4
1Therefore, Christ having suffered [or, since Christ suffered]
on our behalf in [the] flesh, you* also arm yourselves with the same mind
[or, attitude], because the one having suffered in [the] flesh has ceased from
sin, 2so as to live the remaining time in [the] flesh no longer in
the lusts of people, but in [the] will of God.
3For the time of life having past [is] sufficient for us to
accomplish the desire of the Gentiles, having gone [fig., lived] in flagrant
sexual immorality, lusts, drunkenness, drunken orgies, drinking parties, and
unlawful [fig., abominable] idolatries; 4in which they are surprised
[by] your* not running with [them] into the same excess of reckless living,
speaking evil of [you*], 5who will give an account to the One being
prepared to judge [the] living and [the] dead. [cp. Gal 5:19-21] 6Because for this
[reason] the Gospel also was proclaimed to [those now] dead, so that they shall be
judged, on the one hand according to people in flesh [fig., in the current
physical realm], on the other hand they shall live according to God in spirit
[fig., in the spiritual realm of the afterlife].
7But
the end of all [things] has drawn near. Therefore, be sober [or, clear-headed]
and be self-controlled in your* prayers. 8Now above all [be] having
fervent love for one another, because such love will cover a multitude of sins. 9[Be]
hospitable to one another, without complaints.
10Just as each [believer] received a spiritual gift, [be] serving
[with] it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold [or, widely varied]
grace of God. [cp. 1Cor 12:4-7] 11When someone speaks, [let him speak] as [the] oracles
[or, inspired utterances] of God. When someone serves, [let him serve] as from
[the] strength [or, ability] as God supplies, so that in all [things] God shall
be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might [or,
dominion] into the ages of the ages! [fig., forever and ever!] So be it!
12Beloved,
stop being surprised by the fiery ordeal [or, painful suffering] taking place
among you* to try you*, as [though] a strange [thing] is happening to you*. 13But
to the degree that you* are sharing in the sufferings of Christ, be rejoicing,
so that also in the revelation of His glory you* shall rejoice, being very glad.
14When you* are being insulted for the name of Christ, [you* are]
happy [or, blessed], for the Spirit of the glory and of God [fig., the glorious
Spirit of God] rests on you*. On
the one hand according to them, He is being blasphemed, on the other hand
according to you*, He is glorified.
15Be making sure none of you* suffer as a murderer, or a
thief, or an evildoer, or as a meddler into other’s affairs; 16but
if as a Christian, stop being ashamed, but be glorifying God in this matter. 17For
[it is] the time for the judgment to begin with the house of God; but if with us
first, what [will be] the end of the ones refusing to believe the Gospel of God?
18And “If the righteous [person] is scarcely [or, with
difficulty is] saved, where will the ungodly and sinful [person] appear? [fig.,
what will become of the ungodly and sinful [person]?]” [Prov 11:31, LXX] 19So
also the ones suffering according to the will of God, as to a trustworthy
Creator, must be committing [or, entrusting] their souls in good doing.
