1John 4
1Beloved, stop
believing [or, trusting] every spirit, but be testing the spirits [to
see] if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the
world. 2By this is known the Spirit of God: every spirit which
confesses Jesus Christ [as] having come in [the] flesh is of God. 3And
every spirit which does not confess Jesus Christ [as] having come in [the] flesh
is not from God, and this is the [spirit] of the antichrist which you* heard
that it is coming and now is already in the world.
4You* are from God, little children, and
you* have overcome them, because greater is the One in you* than the one in the
world! 5They are from the world; for this reason, they speak
[as] from the world, and the world hears them. 6We are from
God. The one knowing God hears us; [the one] who is not of God does not hear us.
From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deception [or, error].
7Beloved, let us be loving one another, because love
is from God, and every one loving has been begotten from God and knows God. 8The
one not loving did not know [or, come to know] God, because God is love [fig.,
is as to His essence love]. 9By this was the love of God revealed in
us, because God has sent His only-begotten [or, unique] Son into the world, so
that we should live through Him. 10In this is love, not that we
loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son [as] a
propitiation [or, appeasing sacrifice] concerning our sins! 11Beloved,
if God so loved us, we also ought to be loving one another.
12No one has seen God at any time. If we shall be loving
one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13By
this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given to us of
His Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has
sent the Son [as] Savior of the world! [cp. John 3:16] 15Whoever shall confess that
Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16And we
have known [or, have come to know] and have believed [or, have been convinced
of] the love which God has in us. God is love, and the one abiding in that love
abides in God, and God abides in him.
17By this, love has been perfected [or, completed]
with us, so that we shall be having confidence [or, a joyful sense of freedom]
in the day of the judgment, because just as that One is, [so] also we are
in this world. 18[There] is no fear in love, but perfect love
casts out fear, because fear has punishment. But the one fearing has not been
perfected in love. 19We love Him, because He first
loved us.
20If anyone
shall say [or, claim], “I love God,” and shall
be hating his brother, he is a liar; for the one not loving his brother whom he
has seen, how is he able to be loving God whom he has not seen? 21And
this [is] the commandment we have from Him, that the one loving God should also
be loving his brother.
