Top 100 for 114s, October 2008

By Gary F. Zeolla

The following message was posted in the Weight Trainer's United forum and on my MySpace page.

Where I am ranked on the chart for the August 2007 - July 2008 Top 100 powerlifters in the USA for 114s
(Powerlifting USA, October 2008, p. 111)

Lift Weight Rank
Squat 400 #5
Bench 220 #16
Deadlift 390 #10
Total 1010 #6

These lifts are all from my contest on 9/22/08, when I used multi-ply gear. But I entered a contest in June 2008, when I lifted unequipped, but those results were never submitted to Powerlifting USA. If they had been, my deadlift ranking would have been #8, with a 402 pull.

I am rather dissatisfied with these rankings as I always felt I should have been able to do much better. The top squat was only 440 and the top total 1091. If I hadn't had to deal with so many health problems over the last few years and had so many hassles and problems with gear, I honestly feel like I should have been able to top both of those. For that matter, I would have been #3 on squats if my 415 third attempt at last' year's contest had passed. But the bench was my best ranking yet.

In any case, that contest will probably be the last time I ever compete with multi-ply gear, so this is the last time I will really concern myself with the Top 100 list rankings. My rankings from now on will be much lower. For instance, my squat at the contest in June when I was using only knee sleeves was 331. That would place me at #36. What a difference, and a good example of how useless these lists are for anyone who lifts raw or unequipped, except for maybe on deadlifts.
