I had to forgo a second contest this year due to a Rotator Cuff Injury. But I ended my training plan as if I was going to enter a contest rather than have surgery. The date is when I put in my final peaking workout, which was the day before surgery. This line and page indicates what I would have attempted if I had entered contest at this time.

52 Powerlifting Contests

Open Powerlifting is an incredible powerlifting website. It lists just about every contest that has ever been contested, and every powerlifter that has ever completed. It even has a page for every powerlifter with a list of every contest that lifter ever competed in. My page is at: Gary Zeolla.

This list goes back to my college lifting days, while th4e above list is only for contests I have entered since I started to compete again in 2003. I had forgotten about some of those college meets. Altogether, they have 47 contests listed that I have entered over the decades.

However, they’re missing five contests. But four were just Bench Press meets, two I entered in high school (1978,79) and two in 1985. Plus, there was a full power contest I entered while in college at PA’s Rockview State Penitentiary (I’m serious!). But I doubt they will ever find details for those contests, since they were all small, unsanctioned meets.

But still with those five contests, it means I’ve entered 52 powerlifting contests in my lifetime. With my Rotator Cuff Injury, I am not yet sure if I will enter another contest or not.

Best Rankings on Powerlifting USA's Ranking Lists

My best placement on the Top 100 lifters in the USA for 114s.

Deadlift 2005 #6
Total 2005 #5

My best placement on the Top 20 Masters chart was for 2006

Powerlifting Watch’s Ranking Lists

Powerlifting Watch has separate ranking lists for raw without wraps, raw with wraps, single-ply, and mutli-ply lifters. Unfortunately, they are lumping together 114s, 123s, and 132s under the 132 pound class. But despite competing against lifters as much as two weight classes above me, my rankings were not too bad. Below is my placements in their Best of the Best lists, meaning from when they started their ranking lists in 2007 to the present.

All-time Ranking Lists

These lists are for All-time, meaning from the beginning of the sport of powerlifting in the early 1970s to the present. They are also are for all-federations. Open Powerlifting is the clearing house for such ranking lists.

Adding all of these records together, I have broken a total of 114 different federation records since 2003.

All-time Records

These records are for All-time, meaning from the beginning of the sport of powerlifting in the early 1970s to the present. They are also are for all-federations. That means, these are true American and world records, not just federation records. Open Powerlifting is the clearing house for such records.

114s: 40-44: Multi-Ply: Squat: 410

114s: 45-49: Multi-Ply: Squat: 400, Deadlift: 390, Total: 1010.

114s: 45-49: Raw+Wraps: Squat: 331, Deadlift: 402, Total: 920.

114s: 50-54: Raw+Wraps: Squat: 315, Deadlift: 380, Total: 870.

114s: 55-59: Raw+Wraps: Squat: 325, Deadlift: 395, Total: 895.

114s: 60-65: Raw+Wraps: Squat: 335.

123s: 60-65: Raw+Wraps: Squat: 327.5.

In sum, I am #1 in 15 categories, which is to say, I hold 15 all-time masters world records.

Personal Records

I competed in powerlifting in college. Then I stopped powerlifting when I was 21 and did not compete again until I was 42, then stopped again when I was 48, but restarted at 53. I severely regret not having been able to lift and compete through my 20s and 30s. I will always wonder what I might have accomplished if I had been able to do so. But as it is, below are my best lifts from these three different time periods.

College

I competed in powerlifting in college (1979-82).

114s:

Lift Weight Date
Squat 352 2/8/81
Bench 205 10/25/80
Deadlift 410 1/24/81
Total 953 2/8/81

123s:

Lift Weight Date
Squat 425 2/20/82
Bench 240 2/20/82
Deadlift 435 6/19/82
Total 1095 2/20/82

These lifts were done wearing a belt, wrist wraps, and a single-ply poly "super suit" and 2.0 meter "super wraps." That is the only gear that was allowed at that time. Bench shirts were not invented yet.

My 40s

My best lifts from 2003 to 2009 are as follows:

114s: Multi-ply gear, 2.5 meter wraps:

Lift Weight Date
Squat 415 9/2/06
Bench 220 9/22/07
Deadlift 410 7/10/04
Total 1030 4/16/05

As can be seen, I equaled or bettered all of my college lifts at 114s. But its not a fair comparison given that the multi-ply gear of today is much more beneficial than the gear I used in college.

114s: Raw with sleeves

Lift Weight Date
Squat 331 6/708
Bench 187 6/7/08
Deadlift 402 6/708
Total 920 6/708

By "raw with sleeves" is meant a belt and knee sleeves (not knee wraps) on squats and deadlifts and a belt and wrist wraps on benches, but no squat suit or bench press shirt. It can be seen that I am close to what I did in college.

123s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 385 4/8/06
Bench 190 4/8/06
Deadlift 400 4/8/06
Total 975 4/8/06

This was the only contest I entered at 123s during the 2000s. Here, "raw with wraps," meant a belt, wrist wraps, and 2.0 meter knee wraps.

114s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 325 3/4/17
Bench 180 9/10/16
Deadlift 395 9/9/17
Total 895 9/9/17

114s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 325 3/4/17
Bench 180 9/10/16
Deadlift 395 9/9/17
Total 895 9/9/17

My 50s

My best lifts from 2015 to 2020 are as follows:

114s: Raw with sleeves

Lift Weight Date
Squat 300 8/18/18
Bench 170 8/18/18
Deadlift 400 8/18/18
Total 870 8/18/18

114s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 331 9/28/19
Bench 180 9/10/16
Deadlift 405 9/12/20
Total 895 9/9/17

Here, “raw with wraps,” means a belt, wrist wraps, and 2.5 or 3.0 meter knee wraps.

My 60s

My best lifts from 2021 to the present are as follows:

114s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 335 3/27/21
Bench 145 3/27/21
Deadlift 400 3/27/21
Total 870 3/27/21

123s: Raw with wraps

Lift Weight Date
Squat 327.5 9/7/24
Bench 160 9/7/24
Deadlift 385 9/7/24
Total 872.5 9/7/24

Here, “raw with wraps,” means a belt, wrist wraps, and 3.0 meter knee wraps.

Powerlifting and Back Pain

The first book is geared towards the beginner to intermediate powerlifter. It presents sound training, competition, dietary, and supplement advice to aid the reader in starting and progressing in the sport of powerlifting. The second book details how I overcame years of crippling low back and was able to return to the sport of powerlifting.
