Diet Evaluation Logs

2018

By Gary F. Zeolla

These logs are continued from Diet Evaluation Logs - 2017. See the two part article Adjusted Values for Macronutrients, Electrolytes, and Water for why I adjusted some of DietPower's Personal Daily Allowances (PDAs) for these items. And see my books God-given Foods Eating Plan and Creationist Diet: Second Edition for details on the foods I consume and my general nutritional philosophy. Here I will be posting my monthly diet evaluations. I will be including each month's macronutrients, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, fiber, and all of the vitamins and minerals DietPower records.

Personal Daily Allowances

The Personal Daily Allowances (PDAs) are DietPower's version of the USDA's RDAs (Recommended Dietary Allowances). These are based on my gender and age (male, 54). But I adjusted some of them to levels I believe are better for me.

DietPower's default values are as follows:

I only got an "A+" this month due to consuming a bit too many calories and my weigh going up. That was because I added another "meal" to daily meal schedule. Since  am I usually up and working at least an hour before breakfast, I thought it best to get some quick nutrients into my system via a blended drink. I am still experimenting with the ingredients, but it has been including a scoop or two each of brown rice and pea protein powders, an apple, an orange, a cup or two of greens, and a tablespoon of raw honey. I might add flax or chic seeds to it. It has 100-150 calories, but really ups my nutrients. And I am not concerned about my weight right now, as my next contest is two-and a half months away, and I might move up a weight class anyhow. But I will keep an eye on it and keep experimenting with the ingredients in my morning drink until I find what works best.

I got my morning drink figured out, just one large apple, two cups of kale, and two scoops each of brown rice protein and pea protein, plus about 30 ounces of water. That brings it down to about 100 calories and very little carbs, but lots of protein and nutrients. The kale comes from my dad's organic garden, so it is as fresh and healthy ad can be. Come winter, I will get it at Pittsburgh's East End Food Co-op, both fresh, and when I run out that, frozen, but both still organic. Otherwise, I alternated my desired nutrients some, lowering MUFA to 40% and the other two up to 30% each. That was because it was impossible to hit the higher level without eating a lot of nuts. I also lowered the cholesterol to 400 mg, as I cut back on my egg-eating due to my LDL being slightly high.

Then aforementioned morning drink did not work out, as the pea protein was constipating me, but it also seemed to help me sleep. I tried a few other possibilities, but none worked as well as what is said above. Meanwhile, I developed a sensitivity to the glutamine I had been taking for years post-workout, so I've been experimenting with other alternatives to hold me over until I eat my dinner, usually about an hour post-workout. My nutrients will be in a bit of a flux until I get this all worked out. I also go a contest coming up on August 18, so that will affect my nutrient levels for next month.

My powerlifting contest really confused DietPower, so it is not saying I need far more calories than I normally eat. But as my weight stabilizes and my calories get back to normal, it should normalize. But then, I might move up a weight class, and if I do, then I will need the number of calories DietPower is saying I should be consuming.

As a result of my powerlifting contest, DietPower's values got so mess up, I had to reset it. But it seems to have caught up with recommending about what I eat. My dad's garden is done for the season, so I no longer have kale to put in morning drink. That greatly reduced my vitamin A intake from last time, but it is still well above recommended levels. I'm still trying to figure out what to do for that morning drink.

I've been trying to gain some weight, hence the calorie jump, as I might move up a weight class.
