2Timothy 4
1Therefore, I strongly urge [you] before God and the Lord
Jesus Christ, the One being about to be judging [the] living and [the] dead at
His appearing and His kingdom. 2Preach the word! Be ready in season
[and] out of season [fig., whether the time is favorable or not], convict,
rebuke, [and] encourage, with all patience and teaching. 3For there
will be a time when they themselves will not put up with sound teaching, but
according to their own lusts they will heap up teachers to themselves, itching
in the ear [fig., craving to hear what they want to hear], 4and on
the one hand they will turn away the ear from the truth, on the other hand they
will be turned aside to myths. 5But you, be sober [or,
clear-headed] in all [things]; endure hardship; do the work of an evangelist;
completely fulfill your ministry.
6For
I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my
departure has arrived. 7I have fought the good fight; I have finished
the course [or, race]; I have kept the faith. 8Finally, [there] is
laid up for me the victor’s wreath [or, crown] of righteousness which the
Lord, the Righteous Judge, will give to me in that Day, but not only to me, but
also to all the ones having loved His appearing.
9Be
eager [or, diligent] to come to me quickly. 10For Demas abandoned me,
having loved the present age, and traveled to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia,
Titus to Dalmatia. 11Only Luke is with me. Having picked up Mark, be
bringing [him] with yourself, for he is useful to me for ministry [or, service].
[cp. Acts 15:36-40] 12But Tychicus I sent to Ephesus. 13When
you come, bring the cloak which I left in Troas with Carpus, and the scrolls,
especially the parchments.
14Alexander the coppersmith showed to me many evils [fig., did
me much harm]. May the Lord repay him according to his works, 15whom
you also [must] be guarding yourself against, for he greatly stood up against
[or, resisted] our words.
16At
my first defense no one stood with [or, supported] me, but all abandoned
me. May it not be counted against them! 17But the Lord stood by me
and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation shall be completely
fulfilled and all the nations shall hear, and I was rescued out of [the] mouth
of a lion. 18And the Lord will rescue me from every evil work and
will save [or, preserve] [me] for His heavenly kingdom, to whom [be] the glory
into the ages of the ages! [fig., forever and ever!] So be it!
19Greet
Prisca [i.e., Priscilla] and Aquila, and the
household of
Onesiphorus. 20Erastus
stayed in Corinth, but I left Trophimus sick in Miletus [cp. Gal 4:13; Phil
2:25-27; 1Tim 5:23; i.e., Paul and his companions experienced sicknesses]. 21Be eager
[or, diligent] to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, and Pudens and Linus
and Claudia and all the brothers [and sisters].
22The Lord Jesus Christ [be] with your spirit. Grace [be] with
you*! So be it!
