1Timothy 3
1Trustworthy [is] the word: If anyone aspires to [the]
position of overseer [Gr. episkope], he desires a good work. 2Therefore,
it is necessary [for] the overseer to be blameless [or, above reproach], a
husband of one wife [fig., a one-wife kind of man], temperate, self-controlled,
sensible, a friend of strangers [or, hospitable], skillful at teaching, 3not
addicted to wine, not violent [or, quarrelsome], not greedy for dishonest gain, but
gentle [or, considerate], peaceable, not a lover of money; 4leading
his own house well, having children in submission with all dignity 5(but
if someone does not know [how] to lead his own house, how can he take care of an
assembly [or, church] of God?), 6not a new convert, lest having been
swollen up with pride he should fall into [the] judgment of the Devil. 7And
it is necessary [for] him also to have a good testimony from the [ones] outside
[fig., among unbelievers], lest he fall into disgrace and a snare of the Devil.
8In the same manner, deacons [are to be] worthy of respect, not double-tongued, not being given to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain, 9holding the secret [or, mystery] of the faith in a pure conscience. 10But let these also first be tested, then let them be serving as a deacon, being beyond reproach. 11In the same manner, women [or, [their] wives] [are to be] worthy of respect, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in all [things]. 12Let deacons be husbands of one wife [fig., one-wife kind of men], leading their children well and their own houses. 13For the ones having served well as a deacon obtain to themselves a good standing and much boldness [or, confidence] in faith, the [faith] in Christ Jesus.
14These [things] I write to you, hoping [or, expecting] to come to you soon. 15But if I delay, [I write] so that you shall know how it is necessary to be conducting yourself in [the] house of God, which is [the] Assembly [or, Church] of the living God, [the] pillar and foundation of the truth. 16And confessedly, great is the secret [or, mystery] of godliness:
